Cloud Computing is driving a fundamental shift in the way organizations build, deploy and use applications, and it’s raising expectations on how quickly and cost-effectively new IT functionality can be made available to the business. And even though the delivery chain for these “borderless applications” now crosses organizational and geographic boundaries, users will still expect the applications to perform well, and they will hold IT accountable if they don’t. For its part, IT is faced with managing an increasingly complex and diverse delivery chain, consisting of maybe dozens of service and content providers spread around the world.
The challenge for IT is to meet the business expectation of faster delivery of new functionality, while at the same time maintaining end-to-end visibility and control of application performance and availability across an inter-dependent, but independent, network of service providers.
In this session, Compuware will provide some real-world insight into how companies are successfully addressing this challenge, including details of how they can get objective, real-time data on the performance and availability of their prospective cloud service providers to assist them in their decision-making process.”

Articles & Feature Stories By Maureen O'Gara Citrix has opened up a beta of its CloudStack 3, the first release of the open source cloud platform under the Citrix brand.
Citrix acquired the Java-based cloud management last year when it bought Cloud.com. A full production version of the branded stuff is supposed to be available later this quarter.
Citrix said CloudStack is already handling over $1 billion in revenue for more than 85 large-scale production clouds, including Zynga, IDC Frontier and Nokia Research.
CloudStack 3 is supposed to be for any size customer that wants to transform virtualized datacenter resources into automated, elastic, self-service clouds in the IaaS fashion of Amazon. Cloud Computing Journal: Agree or disagree? – "While the IT savings aspect is compelling, the strongest benefit of cloud computing is how it enhances business agility."
Alex Mei: Agree. While driving down the costs associated with IT is certainly an important factor of cloud computing, the ability to create new ways for users to interact and access their data over the cloud is changing the very way that businesses can operate. The fact that cloud co... Feb. 22, 2012 03:22 PM EST Reads: 378 | By Maureen O'Gara In a move up the proverbial stack, Amazon’s cloud now includes a Simple Workflow Service (SWF), or orchestration service, for building scalable, resilient, fault-tolerant, distributed applications that run both on-premise and/or in the cloud, blurring the distinction between them, a move that’s ultimately good for the cloud if it increases the enterprise’s comfort level with the cloud.
Amazon imagines it being used for media processing, web application back-ends, business process automation, data analytics batch processing and of course migration to the cloud.
It says it’s used internally for such things as MapReduce analytics for operational decision-making and managing user-facing content such as web pages, videos and Kindle books.
According to AWS CTO Werner Vogels:
“A growing number of applications are relying on asynchronous and distributed processing, with scalability of the ... Every day, we create 2.5 quintillion (or 2.518) bytes of data, according to IBM.
As corporations across all industries globally are struggling with how to retain, aggregate and analyze this mounting volume of what the industry refers to as Big Data, it also provides a unique opportunity for innovative startups that recognize the business prospects Big Data presents. Interactivity is driving Big Data, with people and machines both consuming and creating it. Digital companies focused on becoming good at aggregating and analyzing the data created by the end users of their product, who then provide their customers with solid insights taken from that data are at a distinct competitive advantage over others in the marketplace. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc.
Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years.
Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing.
Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come.
